There are some wedding days where the weather decides to turn up with a personality of its own. Lauren and James’ June wedding at Marquis Suffolk was one of those days…and when I say it was hot, I mean very hot.
But rather than letting the sunshine dictate the day, Lauren and James embraced it completely. With an outdoor ceremony in the Italian-inspired gardens, creamy florals, plenty of greenery, a string quartet, parasols and a few subtle nods to that relaxed European summer wedding feeling, the whole day felt effortlessly beautiful.
As a Suffolk wedding photographer, I absolutely love photographing weddings at venues where the surroundings can become part of the story. And Marquis Suffolk certainly gives you plenty to work with. Its Italian gardens, mature planting and elegant spaces create such a gorgeous backdrop for photographs, while the layout of the day meant there was plenty of opportunity for natural, candid moments too.
And Lauren and James’ day had all of my favourite things: beautiful details, emotional speeches, lots of laughter, a tiny slither of golden hour and a dance floor that absolutely did not disappoint.

James started his morning just five minutes down the road from Marquis at Cornwallis House, an old bank in the heart of Hadleigh.. It made such a lovely setting for getting ready with his groomsmen.
And can we talk about the suit?! James opted for a creamy, almost white suit, paired with his groomsmen in a lovely light plum shade. It was such a good choice for the weather and fitted the whole aesthetic of the day perfectly. There was something about the combination of the soft colours, sunshine and relaxed styling that immediately gave me those gorgeous European summer wedding vibes.
Lauren looked absolutely incredible in her wedding gown, complete with a cathedral-length veil that made the most beautiful statement as she got ready.
There is something about photographing bridal preparations that I really love. It’s that little pocket of calm before everything changes — the anticipation, the excitement, everyone trying to keep their emotions together and the occasional “oh my goodness, you’re actually getting married today!”
And then, suddenly, it’s time to walk down the aisle.

The ceremony was held outside in the walled garden at Marquis, surrounded by beautiful creamy flowers and lush green foliage.
And honestly? It was gorgeous.
The European feel from the morning continued beautifully into the ceremony. The soft florals, greenery and sunshine all worked together to create a setting that so elegant.
As a Marquis wedding photographer, outdoor ceremonies like this are an absolute dream to photograph.

After the ceremony, everyone made their way through to another section of the walled garden for the drinks reception.
A string quartet provided the soundtrack, which felt like the perfect finishing touch to the whole European garden-party atmosphere. Guests could grab a drink, enjoy the sunshine and catch up with friends and family while the celebrations continued around them.
And yes, it was very sunny.
Luckily, the parasols were on hand and they became a surprisingly useful part of the day!

Family photos don’t have to mean dragging everyone away from the drinks reception for half an hour while Uncle Dave mysteriously disappears. We found a quieter part of the walled garden for Lauren and James’ family photographs, which worked brilliantly. It meant people could move fairly easily between the drinks reception and the photographs without the formal photos becoming part of the general hustle and bustle.
The bridesmaids also made excellent use of the parasols. I’m fairly sure they were welcomed just as much for their ability to provide shade as they were for looking pretty in photographs!
This is one of those little things that can make a big difference on a hot wedding day: finding a sensible location, keeping the formal photographs moving and making sure everyone can get back to enjoying the party.

We also took a little bit of time during the drinks reception to photograph Lauren and James together.
I always think this is a really nice point in the day to sneak away for a few photographs. It’s not about disappearing for ages or missing your own drinks reception – quite the opposite.
I’d kept an eye on the weather and knew we had the potential for some lovely evening light later, so this first portrait session was deliberately short. Just enough time to get some gorgeous photographs of the two of them while still allowing them to maximise their time with their guests.
And, importantly, not overheat.
Because nobody wants a romantic couple’s portrait session to end with one half of the couple quietly melting into the grass.

By the time everyone sat down for dinner, the wedding breakfast room looked absolutely beautiful.
The same creamy florals and greenery from the ceremony had been carried through into the room, tying everything together beautifully. It created a really cohesive look across the whole wedding, from the outdoor ceremony through to dinner.
And then came one of my favourite parts of any wedding day…

I love a speech.
Honestly, speeches are one of my favourite parts of a wedding day to photograph. They’re such a brilliant combination of emotions – tears, laughter, embarrassment, affection, stories nobody knew were coming and occasionally a room full of people trying desperately not to laugh at someone’s expense.
Lauren’s father and James both gave speeches, and they were lovely.
There were plenty of emotional moments, but just as much joy and laughter, and I loved photographing all of those reactions around the room. It’s not just about the person giving the speech – it’s the little glances between couples, parents trying not to cry, friends laughing together and the reactions that happen completely naturally.
Those are often some of my favourite photographs from the day.

As the evening rolled around, the light softened beautifully.
We had a tiny pocket of golden hour, but for the most part the cloud cover actually gave us some gorgeous, soft light that was much kinder for photographs than the blazing sunshine we’d had earlier. Of course, we made use of the parasols again.
And then, just when we thought the golden hour might not happen…
A tiny slither of golden light appeared through the trees. Obviously, I was going to make the most of it.
This was the main portion of Lauren and James’ couple portraits for the day, but it still only took around ten minutes.
Ten minutes!
You really don’t need an hour-long couples’ portrait session to get beautiful photographs. Sometimes a little pocket of time, the right light and a couple who are willing to wander off together is all you need.
And actually, I think keeping it short makes the experience better. Lauren and James got a little bit of time together away from their guests, could take a breath and actually process the fact that they’d just got married, and then they were back to enjoying the evening.
You don’t need to spend your wedding day posing for photographs.
You need to spend it being married.
The photographs are just how we remember it.

Then it was time to party.
The dance floor was every bit as fun as I’d hoped it would be, starting with a gorgeous first dance before quickly descending into the wonderfully messy, energetic kind of dance floor that I absolutely love photographing.
There was dancing. There was laughing. There was a lot of movement.
At one point, Lauren was quite literally picked up mid-boogie.
Which feels like a pretty good indication of how much fun everyone was having.

Lauren and James’ wedding was such a gorgeous day to photograph and Marquis Suffolk was the perfect setting for it all. With its Italian-inspired gardens and beautiful countryside setting, it’s a venue that gives you so many opportunities for natural, relaxed photographs.
As a Suffolk wedding photographer, I feel very lucky to photograph weddings like this one – days that are beautiful, but never feel like they’re just about the photographs. Because ultimately, that’s what I’m there for.
To capture the flowers, the outfits and the golden hour, absolutely. But also the hugs, the laughter, the ridiculous dancing, the tears, the people you love and all the little moments you didn’t even realise were happening. Well, Lauren and James’ day had plenty of all of it. What a gorgeous one!
