Holly & Ruth's Joyful Dunglass Estate Wedding | Dunglass Estate Wedding Photographer

There are weddings where every single moment feels full of joy, and Holly and Ruth’s beautiful Dunglass Estate wedding was exactly that. From emotional first looks and the incredible setting of the old church ruins to Scottish drizzle, cocktails, ceilidh dancing and one of the most energetic dance floors I’ve ever photographed, their wedding day was such a celebration of love, family and friendship.

Having the chance to photograph weddings like this is exactly why I love being a Scotland wedding photographer. Holly and Ruth filled their day with meaningful moments, laughter and so much personality, creating a celebration that reflected them perfectly.

One of the things I love most about photographing a Dunglass Estate wedding is that everyone can relax and enjoy the entire day in one beautiful location.

Holly and Ruth both got ready on site, each surrounded by their closest family and friends. Holly spent the morning in the charming Wendy House Cottage, while Ruth got ready in one of the courtyard cottages. Both mornings were full of incredibly special moments.

Ruth shared an unplanned first look with her Nan that had everyone smiling, followed by another emotional first look with her dad before the ceremony. Across the estate, Holly also shared a wonderfully emotional first look with her father. There were definitely a few happy tears during both mornings, and they made such beautiful memories before the celebrations had even begun.

A Beautiful Ceremony in the Historic Church Ruins

Dunglass Estate’s historic church ruins are one of the most spectacular ceremony locations anywhere in Scotland.

One of my favourite moments of the entire day happened just before the ceremony began. Holly and Ruth wanted to keep the excitement of seeing one another until the aisle, so they stood hidden from each other with their bridal parties on opposite sides of the ancient church walls. They were only metres apart but couldn’t see one another, making the anticipation even more magical.

As guests took their seats, a bagpiper welcomed everyone into the ceremony, adding the perfect Scottish touch. Ruth walked down the aisle first with her dad before Holly followed shortly afterwards, accompanied by both her dad and her brother.

Against the backdrop of centuries-old stone walls and surrounded by smiling faces, they exchanged vows in one of the most beautiful ceremony settings a Dunglass Estate wedding photographer could ask for.

A Little Scottish Rain Makes the Best Memories

No Scotland wedding would quite feel complete without at least a little rain. As everyone gathered outside for confetti, we were greeted by a gentle Scottish drizzle. Out came the umbrellas, everyone laughed, and somehow the confetti became even more fun.

Some of my favourite documentary images from the day came from those few minutes of organised chaos, with colourful confetti flying through the rain and guests laughing together beneath umbrellas.

Afterwards, we spent some time capturing photographs with Holly and Ruth’s closest family and friends before sneaking away for a few relaxed portraits together in the beautiful church ruins. The scenery at Dunglass Estate really does speak for itself, and it provided the most incredible backdrop for their first photographs as newlyweds.

Drinks, Flowers and Time to Celebrate

Knowing we’d have another opportunity for portraits later in the evening meant Holly and Ruth could completely relax and enjoy their drinks reception.

Guests spent the afternoon chatting, enjoying drinks outside and even challenging one another to crazy golf, while the reception room looked absolutely beautiful, filled with stunning floral arrangements ready for the wedding breakfast.

One of the things I always encourage my couples to do is simply enjoy their wedding. Rather than disappearing for long portrait sessions throughout the day, I much prefer letting couples spend valuable time with the people they’ve invited to celebrate with them.

Heartfelt Speeches Before Dinner

Before everyone sat down to eat, it was time for the speeches.

These are always one of my favourite parts of any wedding day to photograph. They’re filled with genuine emotion, spontaneous laughter, proud parents, happy tears and countless little reactions happening all around the room.

Holly and Ruth’s speeches were no exception. There were so many heartfelt stories shared, creating some of my favourite candid photographs from the entire day.

Evening Portraits and a Moment Together

After dinner, guests enjoyed cocktails while Holly and Ruth finally had the chance to enjoy one themselves too.

This felt like the perfect moment to head back outside for another short portrait session.

One of the reasons I love scheduling evening portraits is because weddings move so quickly. Taking just fifteen or twenty minutes together gives couples a chance to pause, breathe and simply enjoy being married before the evening celebrations begin.

The soft Scottish evening light around Dunglass Estate created such a romantic atmosphere, and these portraits became some of my favourites from the whole gallery.

A Ceilidh, Cocktails and the Best Dance Floor

If the ceremony was emotional and the speeches were heartfelt, the evening was pure fun.

With guests travelling from both Scotland and the Midlands, introducing everyone to a ceilidh was guaranteed to create plenty of laughter.

It certainly didn’t disappoint.

The dance floor was absolutely packed, with guests enthusiastically attempting the dances, plenty of hilarious moments unfolding and an incredible atmosphere from start to finish.

It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable celebration.
